In our everyday lives we rarely consider the risk to benefit ratio of ordinary actions. Yet we regularly engage in risky activities from commuting to work to engaging in exciting sporting activities. My participation in spaceflight missions have led me to approach risk in a somewhat analytical manner. NASA uses probabilistic risk assessment, training, checklists, operations, and contingency procedures to mitigate risk that enable the execution of high risk endeavors. In my personal life I have tried to apply this to my passion for climbing the high mountains of planet Earth. I will present an overview of the comparison of spaceflight and mountaineering.
