Do you find yourself solving the same, or similar, problems for mission after mission? Do even small variations in a task from one situation to another make it difficult to estimate effort? The software product line approach moves an organization from software development to product production. The difference is a new level of control that makes your work more predictable and more efficient. That means you can focus on the science. The software product line approach supports the development of an inventory of assets that are used to build more products faster with higherquality. Unlike traditional software reuse schemes, the software product line approach is a unique blend of technical and management practices that establish a context within which the assets don't turn into liabilities. This talk will present basic principles illustrated by examples of successful software product lines in organizations such as NASA, DoD, Cummins, Philips Medical Systems, and Rolls Royce.
