The New York Times graphics desk is a team of 25 designers, cartographers and developers who make charts and maps for the print and web versions of the paper. How do they respond to the news - including elections, disasters, economic crises and sporting events - and what have they learned along the way? Topics include why distributions are more interesting than averages, the importance of establishing a hierarchy, how losing precision can be a strength and how sliders mimic storytelling, based on recent NYT examples created for a general audience.
