I will describe the community-oriented open approach to developing software that has been growing in popularity in recent years, particularly for tools in the Python programming language. As a case study I will focus on the Astropy Project, the main library for Python in astronomy. I will describe Astropy's unusual origins, as well as key features of how and why this community-developed model operates. I will further discuss how this (along with other factors) has led to the explosive growth of the Astropy community since the project's inception. Finally, I will discuss how this Python ecosystem both enables and is enabled by JWST, and possible future directions this model can go to improve astronomy for us all.
